The list below comprises a number of NGOs in Europe that may be able to provide legal assistance to stateless people. Apatride Network compiled the list through a meta-analysis of three databases, as well as input from partners. Please keep in mind that this list is intended as a supplementary resource rather than a guaranteed solution. Legal assistance capacity among NGOs in Europe remains very limited, especially on statelessness.
It is also not uncommon for NGOs to be unable to provide assistance because of insufficient expertise in statelessness, depending on the circumstances of each case. Apatride Network is continuously working with its partners to strengthen legal assistance capacity and improve the situation.
The limited awareness, capacity, resources, and expertise devoted to statelessness reflect a broader tendency to prioritise refugee issues within the state-centric system in which we operate. States are more willing to cooperate on refugee protection and rights, however imperfectly, because refugees can eventually be sent back to the country that they belong to (legally recognised nationality being a mark of that belonging).
